Custom Socks-The Difference of 144, 168 and 200 Needles of Socks

Socks specifications of needles. Generally, there are 120 needle, 144 needle, 168 needle, 200 needle. 96 needle and 72 needle are very seldom to use, there’s no much demand and most machines are not computerized, which mainly for producing the thick needle socks; 220 needle mainly to produce high end sock which has high requirement for the material like mercerized wool. Now we only introduce the difference between 144, 168 and 200 needle which commonly used.

Socks, are mainly produced by 144, 168 and 200 needle, needle means the needle quantities inside the hosiery machine, 144 needle means there are 144 needle for one loop, because the diameter of the cylinder is fixed, so the greater the number of needle, the weaving more dense of the sock. 

The following picture is the 144 needle with half terry/cushion socks, 144 needle normally used 3 ends of yarn so it is the thickest socks, mainly used in sports /athletic socks.

168 needles are mainly double yarn socks, which is slightly thicker than 200 needle, mainly used in normal casual socks, crew socks, mid-calf socks, and knee socks. 


 
Normal casual socks are produced by 200 needles, as shown in picture, 200 needle is mainly used for no show, invisible, ankle, crew, quarter, mid-calf, over the calf, knee high socks. 


 
How to see the difference between the 144, 168 and 200 needles, mainly to see the density of the texture, like the following picture.


 
Hosiery machine can change the needles, such as 144 needle machine can be replaced by 200 needle, but changing needle procedures costing time and labor,  so generally manufacturer are seldom to change the needle.

Custom Socks - The Difference Between Hand Linked Toe & Machine Linked Toe

The toe seam of socks is divided into hand linked seamless toe and machine linked toe. Machine linked toe is sewed by machine, there is a small bone around the toe, the comfort is not good as the hand linked toe but with cheaper labor cost. The hand linked toe is sewed by handmade, there is no bone around the toe to provide better comfortable but with higher labor cost because the capacity is slower much than machine.  

The following details explain the difference between the hand linked toe and machine linked toe. The picture as below is one pair socks just finished knitting and didn’t seam.


The following picture is the difference. The first sock is made by machine linked toe with outstanding bone. The second socks is made by seamless closure, there is no bone around the toe. Normally the hand linked toe is commonly used for baby socks, premium men and women socks; The machine linked toe is commonly used for casual invisible socks, no show socks, quarter socks, crew socks, dress socks, athletic socks, sports socks, mid-calf socks, over the calf socks, knee high socks.
